Volunteer with us!
Available roles include;
Volunteer Director
Join the United We Climb team and help shape our next chapter
Remote or hybrid | Approximately 8–12 hours per month | Voting board role
United We Climb is looking for a new Volunteer Director to join our board as a full voting member.
This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a growing, community-led organisation working to make climbing and the wider outdoors more inclusive, accessible and representative.
We’re at an important point in our development. We’ve built a strong community, developed meaningful partnerships and delivered a growing range of initiatives. Now, we’re looking to strengthen our foundations, build our organisational capacity and develop sustainable ways of working that will allow us to grow our impact for the long term.
We’re looking for someone who wants to help shape that next chapter with us.
About United We Climb
United We Climb is a not-for-profit Community Interest Company (CIC) working to make climbing and the wider outdoor sector more inclusive, accessible and representative, contributing to a more sustainable and community-led future.
Our work is rooted in community. We support wellbeing, reduce barriers to participation, and create meaningful pathways into training, leadership and employment, particularly for people who have traditionally been excluded from climbing and the outdoors.
We work alongside a wide range of communities and organisations, combining lived experience, industry knowledge and strong partnerships to identify and address barriers — from practical barriers to wider systemic challenges within the climbing industry.
We believe people should not only be able to access climbing, but should have the opportunity to belong, progress and help shape its future.
About the role
As a Volunteer Director, you’ll become a full voting member of the UWC board, working alongside our founder, existing directors and wider volunteer team.
You’ll contribute to:
Governance and organisational decision-making
Strategic direction and leadership
Prioritisation and problem-solving
Strengthening organisational capacity and sustainability
Supporting clear communication and coordination
Practical projects or areas where your experience can add value
This is a collaborative, hands-on role. We’re a small and evolving organisation, so there may be opportunities to get involved beyond traditional board responsibilities where that feels useful and appropriate.
The role can be shaped around your strengths, experience and availability.
What we’re looking for
We’re particularly interested in people with professional experience in one or more of the following:
Finance · Fundraising & income generation · Digital & IT · Governance · Project Management · Communications & marketing · Database and CRM Development · Membership Development
You don’t need to have experience in every area — we’re looking for someone who can bring valuable expertise, perspective and constructive challenge to the board.
You also don’t need previous trustee or director experience, and you don’t need to be a climber.
We particularly welcome people who bring lived experience of barriers to accessing climbing, the outdoors or other spaces and opportunities. However, this is not a requirement.
Above all, we’re looking for someone who:
Is motivated by social impact and increasing access to the outdoors
Shares our commitment to inclusion, accessibility and belonging
Communicates clearly and works collaboratively
Is comfortable contributing to an evolving organisation
Can bring an independent and thoughtful perspective
Is willing to offer both support and constructive challenge
Is happy to take a practical, hands-on approach when useful
Why join us?
This is an opportunity to contribute to meaningful, values-led work while gaining or deepening experience in leadership and governance.
As a voting director, you’ll have a genuine voice in important decisions and the opportunity to influence how UWC develops.
You’ll work alongside a diverse, community-led team and help us build the capacity and sustainable foundations needed to increase our impact.
Most importantly, you’ll be helping create a climbing and outdoor sector where more people can access, belong and shape its future.
Time commitment
Approximately 8–12 hours per month, including board meetings, preparation, communication and agreed areas of contribution.
The role is flexible and designed to work around existing commitments. There may occasionally be periods where additional time is useful, for example around funding applications, strategic planning, events or specific projects, but this would be discussed wherever possible.
We want the role to be sustainable and manageable. We do not expect directors to be constantly available.
How to express your interest
If this sounds like something you’d like to be part of, we’d love to hear from you.
Please send us a brief note outlining your background, what interests you about the role and what you feel you could bring to United We Climb.
